The What and The Why

Mike Schwab outdoors in the woods, wearing a trail-worn hat and a relaxed grin — equal parts moto-rider and maker-at-rest.

Hi, I’m Mike — rider, maker, photographer, and lifelong experimenter with a soft spot for blinking LEDs, lightly charred circuits, and the kind of road trips that are more “vibe” than itinerary.

This Is Only a Test is my open notebook — a place to explore whatever’s on the bench, in the viewfinder, or just rolling around in my head while riding twisties or making coffee in the middle of nowhere.

What This Is

It started with the idea of sharing motorcycling stories: sport-touring trips, moto-camping adventures, and the occasional roadside revelation. But like most good rides, it didn’t stick to the planned route.

Now, it’s grown into a broader space — one that covers photography (intentional and accidental), maker projects (with varying degrees of success), and geeky deep-dives into tech like Meshtastic, Eurorack, microcontrollers, and whatever else is blinking or smoking on the bench.

Some posts are polished. Others? Not so much. That’s kind of the point.
Not seeing that just yet? Blame the blowtorch, this is a fresh start.

What You’ll Find Here

  • Moto trip logs, campfire thoughts, and backroad ramblings
  • Maker experiments that sometimes even work
  • Photo captures from both the trail and the train window
  • Tech tangents — WLED, DIY synths, off-grid comms, and beyond
  • The occasional misfit post that defies categorization (and ends up somewhere between the lines)

Why?

Because the best parts of the ride aren’t drawn on the map — and sometimes the only way to figure something out is to write it down. This site is how I test the theory of the open road, share the results, and remember what happened when it’s all a blur a few months later.

If you’ve found your way here, welcome. Poke around, scroll past the smoldering bits, and maybe drop a note if something resonates.
